

Eventually, the orbs can be charged before shooting them, making them more powerful. The main weapon available in the game is Rayman's fist, with which energy orbs can be shot. Rayman starts the game with minimal abilities, and he can gain more abilities as the game progresses. Part of the lums are hidden in small cages, in which other freedom fighters or Teensies are imprisoned, and can be obtained by breaking the cages. Collecting enough lums gains the player access to new parts of the world. The player navigates through a mostly linear sequence of levels, fighting enemy Robo-Pirates, solving puzzles and collecting lums. In contrast to its predecessor, which was a 2D platformer, Rayman 2 is a 3D platformer.

Some back story is also obtained through (optional) instructions from Murfy, a "flying encyclopaedia" who provides explanations on all kinds of gameplay elements. In the beta video there are loads of beta stuff. The fourth screenshot takes place in a level called the Whale Bay, where the pirate seal is not red in the final version. The difference is that there was no flower platform in the final version of the level, there was only one globox kid waiting for you, and Rayman looks diferent. The third screenshot takes place in a level called the Woods of Light. The second screenshot it takes place in the Iron Mountains, the diference there was that Ly the fairy wasn’t shown in that level in the final version. And there was a purple lum and it looked kind of different from the final version. The differences are that there wasn’t a giant orange mushroom in there and the place where the walking shell comes from was not a doghouse.
